Cameron McPherson Smith's fascination with evolution was sparked in 1987 and 1988, when he was a student of Harvard University's early human archaeology field school at the Leakey research station in Northern Kenya. After at year at the University of London's Institute of Archaeology, he went to Durham University in northern England, where he earned a Joint Honours BA in Anthropology & Archaeology. He then completed an MA in Anthropology at Portland State University, in Portland, Oregon, and in 2004 he completed his Ph.D. in Archaeology at Canada's Simon Fraser University, supported by a Steele Scholarship. Although based in the US, Dr. Smith maintains his connections to the UK as a Life Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He currently teaches a variety of courses (from European Prehistory to Introduction to Archaeology) as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Portland State University’s Department of Anthropology. His courses emphasize adaptation and evolution as structuring factors of human prehistory. Dr. Smith has also taught at Simon Fraser University, Washington State University, and Linfield College. In addition to publishing his scientific works (in journals such as the American Journal of Physical Anthropology), Dr. Smith has written popular-science articles for Scientific American MIND, Archaeology, Playboy, Spaceflight, Skeptical Inquirer, South American Explorer, The Next Step, and the Bulletin of Primitive Technology. While co-writing The Top Ten Myths About Evolution and continuing his archaeological excavations and research on the Lower Columbia River with Professor K.M. Ames (current President of the Society for American Archaeology), Dr. Smith is also developing an archaeologial project in China with Dr. Y.M. Lam of the Unviersity of Victoria. The Top Ten Myths About Evolution is his first book. Outside his academic pursuits, Dr. Smith enjoys mountaineering, art, and arctic exploration. He is a Fellow of The Explorers Club. |

Charles Sullivan's interest in evolution began with his studies of Philosophy at Portland State University, where he earned a BA in 1994. He explored the philosophical issues surrounding environmental ethics and evolution while earning an MA in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia, after which he completed an MA in English at Portland State University. He currently teaches composition and creative writing at Portland Community College. He has also taught critical thinking. His composition courses involve an emphasis on argumentative writing, critical thinking, and the value of reason and evidence. His nonfiction writings have appeared in Playboy, Skeptical Inquirer, and The Writer Magazine. The Top Ten Myths About Evolution is his first book. Outside of writing and teaching, Charles enjoys playing hand drums, percussion instruments and listening to African and Caribbean music; his personal web pages are at charlessullivan.org and myspace. | ![]() Charles Sullivan. |
